About

I’m not saying that Canadian cuisine is lacking anything; we have a wealth fabulous and diverse local cuisine, ingredients, agriculture etc.  One thing that stands out to me is how hard it is to find certain ingredients, cooking utensils, proper translations, decent conversion tools without paying a premium for them though.

If one were to let’s say dust off the French cookbooks one may have accumulated over the years where the ingredients have different names in French than they do in Québécois, most things are weighed and not measured, the units of measurement are different as are the things we measure.  Who in Ottawa measures seafood by the litre?

This blog will focus on the following with no exceptions other than when there are exceptions, without exception:

  1. Keeping those aforementioned French cookbooks’ in mind, I will endeavour to post some of my favourites translated into Canadian English (always referencing the source material of course) sharing with you the process, the results and of needless to say the recipes themselves.
  2. Sourcing the hard to find, the off the beaten path and the ‘what the heck is that’ ingredients.  Essentially sharing tips tricks and locations for finding that elusive ingredient you did not think would be so hard to find when you settled on the recipe, or barring that, suitable alternatives.
  3. Tools, gadgets and toys.  By the time this project is all said and done, you will likely know all there is to know about what stocks my cupboards at home, what I wish was on the shelf and what I would get rid of to make room for it.  Being a fairly typical guy, I do enjoy the reviewing of gizmos, gadgets and doodads and would love to hear your recommendations while I am at it as well.
  4. I do not dine out that often but when I do I like to take notes on the highlights and lowlights of the festivities so I will likely share the occasional restaurant review thrown in for good measure.  There is a wealth of tremendous local eateries strewn throughout the Ottawa Gatineau region so if you have recommendations or warnings for that matter, feel free to let us know in the comments section below.

I myself have no direct ties to the food and beverage industry other than I enjoy both food and the occasional beverage.  I have a technical theatre background however earn my keep and keep a roof over my family’s head as an account manager for a Kanata tech firm.  The rest of my time is spent with my wife, playing with my daughter and trying my damnest to eat, drink and be merry.  Also, je m’appel Marc.

A quick disclaimer, if you happen to be the publisher or author of any of the recipes I have posted here and would not wish to have it included on this site, please let me know and I will have it removed ASAP.  This blog is intended for non commercial and information purpose only.  Every attempt has been made to identify source material and refer the reader establishments where they can obtain legal copies themselves.
